Surprising many tourists and foreign visitors who envision France as a land of traditional well-preserved architecture, lavish palaces, manicured gardens, medieval castles and classical buildings and monuments, France shows the world its modern visage at La Défense District.
La Défense is the vibrant state-of-the-art concrete, steel and glass corporate, financial and business center just west of Paris. This elegantly planned urbanization of futuristic-looking and tall skyscrapers serves as proud, maverick France's domestic and international lettre de présentation showcasing its increasing economic, technological, entrepreneurial, geopolitical and military might in Europe and in the world.
Some make fun of it. Some despise it. Some just appreciate it for its incredibly palatable and fabulously presented haute cuisine. Some may be slaves to its fashions and dictates on personal and living trends and styles. Some accuse it of being often indecisive, out of step and out of touch with today's current events and realities. Others even see it as a nation in frank and irreversible decline, with acutely pressing social, ethno-cultural and economic challenges. Others yet unconditionally admired it.
Most simply envy it.
Whatever your concept, feeling or grudge on France may be, the fact of the matter is that its level of recognizability, marketability and ability to influence geopolitical and cultural world affairs remains unshaken and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
I will not embark on a long and tedious diatribe or apology about France and its numerous, indelible and ongoing contributions to western and universal culture, science and technology since its establishment as one of Europe's first post-Roman nation-states more than one thousand years ago. I leave that to you as a pleasurable and educational decision to consider, explore and fulfill.
